Turns out zoe swims with her eyes open

Zoe

Kyra’s been asking about stories of what she did when she was little lately. I think it stemmed from seeing pictures of herself on the slideshow we sometimes show on the tv while we are listening to music, or maybe it’s because we keep talking about how she’s growing up so fast. She’s four and a half and eleven twelfths, after all (That’s what Kyra will tell you. I tried to explain her exact age in fractions the other night and it got confusing.). While in the middle of telling a story to Kyra and Zoe about something Kyra did when she was a toddler, Zoe said, “What did I do, Mommy?”

Maybe it’s because Kyra was our first born or because we were better about making a habit of recording certain milestones and stories about Kyra, but it took me longer than I thought it should to recall a specific story. I felt horrible. I decided to we needed to change that.

We’re all sort of used it by now, but Zoe wakes up a little grumpy. She normally does not want to be talked to and would prefer to ease in to the morning. It’s not all that uncommon to be yelled at because you are not the right parent to take her to the bathroom. BUT….some mornings she will hug you and hug you as tightly as she can for as long as you want. The other day, she pranced into the bedroom gleefully saying, “Snuggle, snuggle, snuggle! I want to snuggle!” She gives some of the best hugs.

She’s at that frustrating stage when she wants to do most things by herself, but then gets upset when she can’t finish the task on her own (ie- turning on the bathroom light, putting her head through the neck hole) Other times, she’ll say, “I’m Missy, Mommy” in her best baby voice (Missy is a baby from an Amelia Bedelia book) and she’ll want you to spoon-feed her breakfast. Whether it’s independent Zoe or baby Zoe vacillates throughout the day. She keeps us on our toes.

That being said, we are continually impressed by the things she says and does. We’ve been reading the Ramona series to the girls after seeing how much they enjoyed one of the books on CD we took for the drive to San Diego. I wasn’t sure how interested she’d be in reading a chapter at a time at home, where she could be free to roam around if she wanted to do other things. She has not only been sitting through the reading, but after talking about pieces of the book with the girls as it comes up throughout the day, I’m realizing just how much she’s listening and comprehending the story.

It seems that more and more, Zoe and Kyra are finding things to do together that they both genuinely enjoy. It is very interesting to see how there relationship is unfolding. They have their moments when there’s much screaming and not much fun. However, they have moments when I can see they are becoming great friends. The other day Kyra said, “Zoe, you’re my best. I love you more than anyone else in our family. Zoe, do you love me the best?” Zoe looked at her and said, “Yeah, I love you the best.”
